What is Massage Therapy?
Massage is the manual manipulation of soft body tissues (muscle, connective tissue, tendons and
ligaments) to enhance health and wellbeing. Massage and bodywork can reduce chronic pain, anxiety,
stress, help improve body alignment, enhance your immune system and increase range of motion
through therapeutic touch and soft tissue manipulation. Massage is generally considered part of
complementary and integrative medicine. It is increasingly being offered along with standard treatment
for a wide range of medical conditions and situations.
Studies of the benefits of massage demonstrate that it is an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain
and muscle tension. Massage therapy may be recommended to help people cope with the pain and
stress of cancer, heart disease, stomach problems, fibromyalgia or other conditions.

Benefits of Massage Therapy?
While more research is needed to confirm the benefits of massage, some studies have found massage
may also be helpful for:
Anxiety
Digestive Disorders
Fibromyalgia
Headaches
Insomnia Related to Stress
Myofascial Pain Syndrome
Soft Tissue Strains or Injuries
Sports Injuries
Temporomandibular Joint Pain

What to Expect
Following a brief consultation, your message therapist will create a wellbeing plan during your first
session, which is personalized with your goals, and the recommended services (and frequency) to
achieve these goals.
Table massage is typically done undressed under a drape. Plan to undress to the level you are
comfortable. During your session, a range of techniques can be used, including compressions, trigger
point, deep tissue, cross fiber friction, isolated stretches, tapotement, effleurage, petrissage and
cupping.
At the end of your session, your massage therapist will provide some recommendations on what to do
or avoid for the following 24 hours.

Swedish Massage

A light massage that consists of long, smooth strokes. The benefits include increased blood circulation,
decreased stress and muscle tension and improved range of motion.

Deep Muscle Therapy

Designed to aid in the restoration of damaged muscles and soft tissue. With its natural healing
properties, it helps restore circulation on the cellular level.

Prenatal

Therapeutic bodywork that focuses on the special needs of the mother-to-be as her body goes through changes of pregnancy. It enhances the function of muscles and joints, improves circulation and relieves mental and physical fatigue. Prenatal massage is typically done in a side lying position with pillows to help support the body.
